What do the different religions have to say on this matter? You might look at some of the arguments for the existence of God and the different kinds of evil in the world. What kinds of events are hard to understand or make sense of? Can you see any positive outcomes for them?
To make this a WOW answer, you have to be able to imagine the kinds of arguments that might be made to justify allowing terrible things to happen. It would be acceptable to write from the point of view of an imagined messenger from God, explaining why bad things happen.
